I still remember how it felt to sit at a computer in the “majors'' area of the A&E department I worked in and watch the timer tick down to the four-hour target. On our screens we had a digital table showing every patient in the department, their basic information, and a number that changed every second as you watched the screen. A timer that began the moment they arrived in the department, the number starting off green, and as the timer ticked up, the number would turn to amber, and if the patient stayed in A&E long enough, it would turn red.
