For many years, some of our oldest and most established medical institutions have claimed they cannot speak up about government policy and the NHS because to do so would be “political”. Of course, there have been exceptions. The Royal College of Emergency Medicine speaks up time and time again about their concerns about the safety of patients, and several important reports have been published in recent years highlighting these issues, notably one from the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AOMRC) called “Fixing the NHS. Why we must stop normalising the unacceptable”. Overall, however, their behaviour has been extremely disappointing. Our public healthcare system is being destroyed by the actions of our politicians, and some of the most powerful figures and institutions in UK healthcare have stayed silent.
