A few years ago HEE produced a forward look to 2027. Lots of assumptions you could disagree with but I thought it was quite good and could be updated as assumptions changed. Essentially it disappeared without trace and an almost mythical workforce plan was mooted before I retired. I've only seen the headline numbers and frankly, the idea of 60,000 extra doctors alone, is laughable. We are never going to fill these from our schools, so a huge proportion would have to come from overseas and we know how the Tories have weaponised immigration.
Moreover, if you are young and bright do you want the years and costs of training when you can earn ridiculous amounts in finance and tech? And not even touched on affordability. As for 170k more nurses - maybe with forced labour....
I think when PAs came in there was talk of them developing into a quasi-apprentice route to doctor level. Good idea perhaps? Not everyone goes to elite schools or universities. However, in Sunak's hands it does feel more like a Poundland approach to medicine.
To be honest Clive it’s difficult to take any of their pledges seriously now, isn’t it? They’ve been promising more doctors and nurses for many years; and then present the stats cleverly to make themselves look good…
Great stuff but it’s clear this government are intentionally running the service down just months from a general election and today reports of 7.8 million on waiting list for treatment in the NHS ! 7.8 million waiting ! This is only going to end one way! What a way to treat your own people !!..,
I really believe that so.e MPs are more interested in filling their own pockets rather than helping the NHS get proper funding and Support. I neither trust the Tories or Labour under Starmer to do anything and tbh the greens and lindens are as bad!
Yes, they are. It's the plan. We no longer have a national health service in England. We have 42 regional American accountable (to shareholders) care (less) systems (scams) under the malign control of mainly US corporations. ACOs exist to generate profits. They do this very simply by 1) rationing and/or denying care; 2) screwing and alienating staff (the biggest cost) and replacing those that remain by cheaper versions and/or apps. The plan was devised for Hunt by Simon Stevens on behalf of McKinsey and United Health of Minneapolis. That's the message which most opposition MPs and nearly all local councillors refuse to hear (and which it is our duty to explain to each other and a wider audience at every conceivable opportunity): "The NHS has been abolished. Our duty now is to reinstate it as a fully public national service." The Tories are gung ho for the abolition and the Labour front bench is right behind them. We have to form our own movement - of which groups like this are a vital part - to take back and rebuild what has been stolen and broken.
There are some Politicians who genuinely care for their constituents and the Country, I have become cynical I think? I feel we genuinely need a new political party one without baggage! A new political party that listens and acts rather than promises that are never kept,or the Faux outrage at another party when their promises are unkept
I think whoever is in power next, we’re going to need to put them under a lot of pressure to restore fully publicly owned, functioning public services!
I am now handled by an array of technicians & other meaningless job titles, who are often little more than administrators. They have no real clinical training/knowledge, particularly in relation to pre-existing conditions outside of their sphere, so their diagnostic ability must be limited. I have the same concerns about expanding the use of pharmacists – plus no access to medical history, no ability to conduct examinations, no Hippocratic oath & they make a living from selling stuff.

It’s so awful isn’t it? I’m hearing from people who’ve been quoted extremely long waits for elective surgery- over 3 years!!

There are definitely some good politicians out there but they don’t seem to hold a lot of influence right now!! It must be such a frustrating job…

The damage being done, in plain sight but generally not reported is heartbreaking. Thanks Ju.

Democracy
Pressure the government until they see sense! What worries me is the new laws on protest, we are in an undemocratic autocracy
Another excellent and thought provoking piece Julia.
Thank you so much Robert for all of your support!
Absolutely - it's become a parody government in every aspect. I don't think they even know they are lying anymore.
